So if you're searching for a way to tackle this problem, here are the steps you can perform.
Remember, these are just temporary steps to save your important documents, files, etc.

Check whether the files are not in hidden mode. You can do this by first "Showing" hidden files and folders. Do this by going in the Organise option (on Windows Xp/Vista/7 machines) and then going to View tab and Clicking the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" radio button.
On Windows 8, just go to the View tab of Windows Explorer and Check the "Hidden Items" check box.

Step 2:
Click on Start > Run > type "cmd" > press enter. Or simply press the Win + R keys to bring up the Run Box, type "cmd" and press enter.
Here I assume all external hard drive as having drive letter I: .
By default your C: drive is active.
Type "Cd\" and press Enter.
"C:\" will appear, then type the drive name i.e I: and press enter.
"I:\" will appear on screen.

  attrib -h -r -s /s /d I:\*.*
